Sign up for the “To Transform a City” Blog Tour

by Andrew Rogers

To Transform a City by Eric Swanson and Sam WilliamsAnnouncing the To Transform a City Blog Tour! During January 10-14 we’re asking bloggers to review and discuss Eric Swanson’s and Sam Williams’ new book, To Transform a City: Whole Church, Whole Gospel, Whole City.

In the intro to the book Swanson and Williams cut to the chase with these lines:

There are now, scattered around the globe, more people living in cities than in the rural areas of the world. Most important, this is an irreversible trend. For the rest of human history, the earth’s population will be more urban than rural.3 We believe that this historic shift has huge implications for the mission of the church as we seek to transform our communities.

Ethnic Blends: Social Justice is Who We Are

by Andrew Rogers

Ethnic Blends, Mark DeYmaz, Harry Li, Leadership NetworkA couple of weeks ago we posted the blog tour sign up for Ethnic Blends. Just a reminder for those of you who signed up that the tour is only two weeks away – November 1-5!

In chapter 3, “Overcoming Theological Obstacles” DeYmaz and Li make some salient points about social justice in regards to the multi-ethnic church:

First, we have found that in a healthy multi-ethnic church, social justice is not so much a program to pursure; rather, it is who we are. In other words, a missional mindset quite naturally flows from the diversity of the body itself. In this sense, then, Mosaic [their church] is not som much focused on becoming missional; rather we are the mission! We are not so much focused on building bridges tot he community; we are the community! [emphasis mine] (p.93)

Mark DeYmaz is serious about making the local church diverse. He’s the author of two books on the subject, the newest being, Ethnic Blends: Mixing Diversity into Your Local Church, with Harry Li. It’s part of the Leadership Network Innovation Series.

Here’s what some others have said about Ethnic Blends:

For those doing the hard and important work of helping to build the ethnically diverse church, Ethnic Blends offers much-needed encouragement and a road map forward. — Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, Author, and Professor, North Park Theological Seminary

God called us to reach people, love people, and help people grow in Christ, no matter what their background is. This book helps us to recapture that vision in a powerful way. — Jonathan Falwell, Pastor, Thomas Road Baptist Church

The Ethnic Blends blog tour will be November 1-5. Sign up here to participate. [Sorry! This blog tour sign up has closed.] If your blog is approved you’ll be sent a FREE copy of the book. Then post your review on Amazon and on your blog. It’s that simple!

10 Ministry Essentials and a recap of the Blog Tour

by Andrew Rogers
Turning Controversy into Church Ministry: A Christlike Response to Homosexuality by W.P. Campbell

Turning Controversy into Church Ministry: A Christlike Response to Homosexuality

I really enjoyed our recent blog tour supporting Turning Controversy into Church Ministry. I use the word “enjoyed” because throughtout the blog tour I sensed a genuine desire by all participants to approach the topic of homosexuality with love, respect, and general civility. Truly, that’s a step in the right direction for church ministry to those struggling with same-sex attraction - regardless of your belief on the matter. Thank you all.

On page 17 of Turning Controversy into Church Ministry W.P. Campbell offers us “Ten Ministry Essentials” that set the tone for how to minister to people struggling with same-sex attraction:

1. The best way to avoid extremes is to follow Christ’s example.

2. Churches that blend uncompromised grace and truth are positioned for dynamic ministry.

3. Ministry begins when we connect brokenness in our hearts with brokenness in others.

4. Church leadership is about godly role models, not rights.

Staggering Statistics about Unhappy Pastors

by Andrew Rogers

The Turning Controversy into Church Ministry blog tour is almost here, Sept. 13-17. As I prepare for this blog tour I stumbled across this quote from chapter one . W.P. Campbell writes:

Rapid changes in societal values have swept over the church in a torrent that has many pastors holding on for the ride, or holding their breath and looking for a way of escape. Could this be why 80 percent of pastors would find another job if they were able, and 85 percent of pastors’ wives are depressed? It is vital that we identify the currents that are coming against the church if we hope to navigate our congregations to safe ground and settle them as outposts of recovery for the needy, the hurting, the drowning people we are called to reach.

The statistics he quotes above floored me. 80% !? 85% !? Those are staggering numbers.
